Beach at Kapuka`ulua (Lime Kiln)
To the East of Baldwin beach there are 3 parcels of land which formerly comprised the infamous "Montana Beach" fiasco. Before that, they were A&B's Lime Kiln.
The county owns the two parcels on each end and is trying to acquire the center parcel. Apparently some foreigner has a contract to buy that parcel and is trying to gouge the County (and people of Maui). Since he can't build on it anyway and since he apparently is willing to tie the County up in Court forever, this might be a good opportunity to use eminent domain.
A beautiful residence was (illegally) built on the land and could be used by the public, if funds were allocated for its upkeep. Although some call for demolishing it, clearly it would be unecological to destroy the structure and dump it in our landfill. Better use would be for the public as part of the park.
In the past, this Baldwin Beach area was known as "Kapuka'ulua" (Ulua Fishing Spot), a famous fishing spot. There once was a heiau located at Kapuka'ulua Point, overlooking the Baldwin Beach Park. This area experiences significant shoreline erosion and the heiau fell into the ocean. Archaeologists have found remains of bodies in the sands, indicating a battle may have been fought here.
